Fitbit Unveils First Smartwatch, Wireless Headphones

Move over, Apple: Fitbit just unveiled its first smartwatch.

Dubbed Fitbit Ionic, the wearable is marketed as a health-and-fitness platform with smart features.

Pay for a protein bar between on-device workouts by swiping your wrist; check social media notifications before tracking sleep habits; turn up your favorite playlist while taking a dip in the pool.

The watch also comes with heart rate tracking, GPS, and a variety of applications (Pandora, Starbucks, AccuWeather, etc.) and clock faces for additional personalization.

“With Ionic, we will deliver what consumers have not yet seen in a smartwatch,” Fitbit CEO James Park said, tipping “a health-and-fitness-first platform that combines the power of personalization and deeper insights with our most advanced technology to date, unlocking opportunities for unprecedented health tracking capabilities in the future.”

Fitness fanatics can pre-order the $299.95 gadget now via Fitbit.com. Ionic hits shelves at Amazon, Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Kohl’s, Macy’s, REI, Target, and Verizon in October.

Choose between three standard color combinations: silver/blue (looks purple to me), gray/charcoal, orange/blue, or class things up with a leather band, available separately for $59.95.

Boasting new functions like swim exercise mode, contactless payments, and multi-day battery life, Fitbit’s wearable personal trainer/running companion still feels like home with hallmarks including step and calorie counters and cardio fitness levels.

Keep an eye out next year for the special-edition Adidas Fitbit Ionic and training programs.

The whole point of a smartwatch is to be able to function without a mobile phone. Unless you rely on music to get through a workout. In which case, Fitbit has you covered.

The brand also introduced Flyer: Durable, customizable, sweatproof wireless headphones that seamlessly connect to the Ionic watch. Snag a $129.95 pre-sale pair (in “lunar gray” or “nightfall blue”), and tap into the upcoming Fitbit Coach app to access Audio Coaching sessions and Guided Health Programs.

And, coming full fitness circle, the company this week announced its second-generation Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale, re-engineered for better accuracy and easy Bluetooth setup. Sync data from the Aria 2 with the Fitbit app to track body composition—weight, body fat percentage, lean mass, BMI.

Priced at $129.95, the scale comes in black or white, and is scheduled for release this fall via Fitbit.com, Amazon, Best Buy, and Brookstone.
